Job description

Title: Senior Laboratory Scientist

Location: Co. Offaly

The Senior Laboratory Scientist is responsible for preparing technical leadership to the company's Laboratory. This involves identifying and supervising the implementation of process improvements, carrying out experiments, developing test methods and presenting new technology; all with the objective of supporting the company Customer base and upgrading the Laboratory operation.


  • Execute standard microbiological procedures and techniques including but not limited to the use of microbiological procedures and techniques, aseptic technique, culture preparation, LAL endotoxin testing, bioburden testing, environmental monitoring, biological indicator testing, product inoculations and sterility testing.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and machinery, including but not restricted to autoclaves, balances, heating mantles, gas chromatographs, incubators, laminar air flows, cleanrooms, pH meters, filtration apparatus, temperature monitoring systems, pipettes, thermometers, kinetic and gel clot equipment and MALDI-ToF.
  • Act as a subject matter for several Laboratory testing areas such as; providing technical information to other departments and outside parties as required, directing research and method development, enhancing the reputation or the laboratory and organisation by accepting ownership for achieving Customer projects and investigating opportunities to add value within the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts within the company's Global Laboratories network to comprehend best practice, aid problem solving, and knowledge sharing and identify enhancement opportunities for the facility.
  • Direct the successful delivery of projects as agreed with the Laboratory Manager. Making sure all projects are completed on schedule, to budget and to specification along with progress developments communicated throughout the duration of the project. This will incorporate maintaining a close working relationship with various internal company departments, ensuring they are kept updated and prepared for planned changes, ensuring any implications are understood and appropriately assessed.
  • Assist in the development of new services as requested by the marketplace and inquire into business issues and opportunities by identifying, aggregating, and analysing data, bringing about improvements to aid decision making.
  • Supervise the organisation and implementation of change initiatives, including management of the change control process, PFMEA review, updates to procedures and training.
  • Consistently reviewing testing methods used in the laboratory for improvements.
  • Continuously inquiring and reviewing the changes of new methods, equipment, or instruments.
  • Consistently review relevant standards for updates, including the pharmacopeia and where suitable perform analysis and assisting with procedural review.
  • As a member of the Senior Team, actively participate in the evaluation and approval of Customer test paperwork and test certificates.
  • Conduct the creation of new work instructions as well as reviewing and implementing updates to existing work instructions as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science related discipline (Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biology, Chemistry).
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working as a Technologist/Technician in a predominantly microbiology focused service testing Laboratory.
