Leading Innovator of Medical Devices | Case Study | Kelly Services
Leading Innovator of Medical Devices
Our client’s Cork site focuses on the production of medical devices to treat conditions related to the heart, including cardiac rhythm management, electrophysiology, endoscopy and interventional cardiology, as well as the development of asthma treatments.
Our client has fluctuating staffing requirements that necessitate a flexible production workforce. Historically production workers were hired for on-going temporary assignments; these are now fixed term assignments. The challenge for Kelly is to successfully manage the regular recruitment of an on-going stream of screened workers to meet the demands of the fixed term assignments, and any subsequent off-boarding.
Due to the extremely precise nature of the work carried out by the Product Builders, Kelly has developed a unique and very detailed screening process that incorporates:
- Initial telephone screening
- Aptitude assessment
- Competency-based interview based on compliance, quality, conflict, team and listening skills
- Assessment centre
- Procurement of two references
- Medical including tests for colour blindness and depth of sight
- Final stage short interview with HR/ line management
Successful candidates are then added to Kelly’s candidate pool. This can mean they immediately start work, or they may have to wait 2-5 weeks for the next available vacancy.
Once the candidates are on-board, Kelly is also responsible for staff retention and loyalty, including running an induction session on the first day of each individual’s contract. Weekly clinics have been implemented, held in an informal environment, for Kelly workers to attend to raise any issues, suggestions and give feedback to minimise attrition.
Kelly has been able to source a high and sustainable volume of individuals with the correct skills, attitude and work ethic, managing a flexible workforce that has peaked at 440. To date Kelly has recruited over 2000 Product Builders for this facility, meeting the customer’s hiring deadlines 99% of the time. On a regular basis, the quality of candidates and level of service provided are positively commended. Kelly has succeeded in building a real community amongst their workers, despite individuals only working at the facility for a set period of time.
